Amorgos...if you don't know it, let's start off on the right foot! Beautiful, distant, difficult to reach, authentic, true, outside the most famous tourist circuits .
An atmosphere that takes you back in time , among elderly people sitting in front of houses, playing cards at the bar, donkeys going up and down the alleys of the villages, people picking marjoram, free smiles.
If you manage to set foot on this island it will be very difficult to go home without crying...
The Amorgos Crossing allows you to touch a large part of the island with your eyes and feet, passing from south-west Kalotaritissa to north-east Tolaria.
Detail
Day 0 - Travel to Athens, overnight stay in a hotel in Piraeus, first meeting with the group
Day 1 – Ferry Piraeus-Amorgos (reservations will follow) where a taxi will take us to the beginning of our adventure: Arkesini. Accommodation in the room, and walk. Today's walk takes us to the westernmost part of the island, the beach of Kalotaritissa, or Ag. Anna, climbing up the mountain to return to "home" (6-10 km, 300m altitude difference +). Possibility of swimming. Dinner in a delicious typical tavern.
Day 2- The itinerant crossing begins : we leave Arkesini to head towards Katapola (15km, 500m difference in altitude +). A spectacularly mixed itinerary between panoramic views, donkeys and rocks takes us first to Ancient Arkesini , then above Katapola, one of the two ports of the island. After having filled our eyes with this panoramic view, we go down to the port to have lunch in the early afternoon in a small tavern. We are in Amorgos and times don't matter here. Coffee and free time for swimming while we admire some small sailing boats moored in the port.
Day 3 - Breakfast in a cafenion before putting the backpack back on our shoulders: a short but intense climb takes us to the roof of the island, up there where the old windmills dominate. Lunch in the backpack, we head downhill towards the famous Sant´Anna beach with the wedding church, before going up to the spectacular monastery of Hozoviotissa, the most photographed view of the island . Imagine a white monastery nestled among the rocks of the mountain, in front of you the sea to dominate, below you many kittens and white stairs to reach it. We go back up to the Chora , a view of the sunset before going down to refresh ourselves among the alleys of this small village colored in light blue and fuchsia with bougainvillea . Fingers crossed and we hope to find live Greek music. (10km, 700m difference in altitude +)
Day 4- Long and intense day. After breakfast in the small Chora bar and shopping for an itinerant lunch. Today we cross the island in its narrowest part from Chora to reach Aegiali, the second port of the island. Walking overlooking the sea, with the wind in our faces, we reach uninhabited places, where goats and donkeys dominate the rocks. Several steps down take us to the destination: optional aperitif/toast and swimming in the sea . Last km to reach our accommodation in Toularia , a tiny village from which it is possible to see the sunset . Dinner at a delicious typical tavern . (17km, 700m difference in altitude +)
Day 5 - Breakfast at the only open cafe, circular walk starting from the accommodation in Toularia towards Langada and the wonderful Monastery of St. John (17km, 700m altitude difference +)
Day 6 - Breakfast at the only open cafe in the village run by an elderly gentleman, then we walked down a small path that took us to Aegiali. Breakfast among the alleys still asleep in the morning, among cats queuing in front of the fishing boats waiting for their breakfast . Bus/taxi from Aegiali to the port of Katapola (1h)
Last looks at this island that knows how to conquer, at its slow rhythm that gets into your bones, at its colors printed vividly in your mind, the smiles of the elderly, the donkeys that bray and keep you company: goodbye Amorgos! You are Beautifully True!
Ferry to Athens Seajets 1.30pm-8.55pm from Katapola to Athens Piraeus (reservation directions will follow)
