The Gorgona Penal Colony

One of the island's most compelling chapters is its role as the site of a penal colony, established in the 19th century as part of Italy's efforts to reform its prison system. Initially conceived as a place of punishment and isolation, the colony evolved into a unique experiment in rehabilitation, with inmates working the land as part of their sentence.

The Carcere di Gorgona: A Symbol of Rehabilitation

The Carcere di Gorgona, or Gorgona Prison, stands as a testament to the island's storied past. Today, the former prison buildings serve as a reminder of the island's complex history, while also housing educational and vocational programs aimed at reintegrating inmates into society.
